Collection contains letters, including one from Newsom revealing his desire for peace, his concern with having enough clothing and concern for his family. He was in the 7th N.C. Infantry. Another letter of Allen Newsom to General Winder concerns two men employed on his farm, evidently paroled U.S. prisoners.

J. F. Newsom was a mining engineer in the first part of the twentieth century. He was a consultant for mining corporations throughout the Rocky Mountain West, Mexico, Central and South America and the Malay Peninsula. His office was located in San Francisco, California.
